I went tree planting last summer and I found it a very challenging, but rewarding experience. I felt that I had broken free of constraints on what I, as a woman, could and couldn’t do. I proved myself capable of accomplishing something that I thought was beyond me. And, perhaps most significantly, I escaped the stereotype of men and women jobs.

I adopted my first cat from Kitty Kare, a non-profit organization that rescues cats who are about to be euthanized by the Thunder Bay Humane Society. Cats are sometimes euthanized only for the purpose of making room for new animals, even if they are perfectly healthy. I am a strong believer in adopting animals rather than buying from breeders, because there are so many strays that need good homes. My cat, Miah, was supposed to be euthanized on September 24, 2013.

My second cat, Teddy, has an umbilical hernia from his mother dragging him during birth. We received him from a family, who wasn’t able to provide him with the daily care that he needs. He will need to have surgery to remove the hernia when he is old enough.

I prefer to support local businesses, because it boosts our local economy. When the money stays in the Thunder Bay community, it enhances the speed and circulation of money, which means that money is passed through more people and they have the benefit of what they purchased. I enjoy supporting various organic restuarants, such as Growing Season, Organic Cafe, and Bean Fiend.
